Every time I pick up my camera, it's not just an act of faith, but an act of defiance. The moment my viewfinder reaches my eye, I feel like I am piercing a hole through that veil of self doubt and fear I was raised under. I love doing what I do, and photographing what I photograph. It is first and foremost done as an act of self love. I've promised myself I will only do what makes me happy, or die trying. Financial success has never been my goal, and it never will be.
That self doubt was embedded in me by the colonial heritage that has enslaved Puerto Ricans like me for so long. We are brought up to feel lesser than the others. Hence, this first book for me is precisely about reminding myself and others to not give up and believe in ourselves in spite of what our own cultures or upbringings might have lead us to believe. I am portraying BIPOC dancers, that look like me, because I wanted to remind myself that I am not alone in this fight. Through the relationships that we've built on every session, I've received nothing but their love and their support. They have believed in me when so many others wouldn't. They have held my hand in this journey. That is why in so many ways, I can attest, this is not my first book, but ours.
Let this be my letter of gratitude for welcoming me and allowing me to experience and witness your greatness. Let those who come after us find inspiration through these works and help them believe in themselves the way you have lifted me up.
Thank you!
